5 essential bras every woman should own

Updated: Jan 13, 2020

Plan your wardrobe

All of my adult life, I have been on a quest to find the perfect bra. I have shopped at major chain retailers, custom boutiques and ordered online. When travelling, I always made sure to visit lingerie stores in other countries. That's how I ended up with a drawer full of more than twenty bras. How many of them did I wear? Just one or two. The rest were beautiful but so uncomfortable that I often didn't even take the tags off when I got home. What a waste of money.

Bras work harder than any other item in our wardrobe. We spend up to 18 hours a day wearing them. They create our silhouette and affect everything else we wear.

So, how many bras do you really need?

The rule of three

At a minimum, women need at least three well-fitting, comfortable, flattering, pretty bras--one to wear, one to wash, and a spare if anything goes wrong with the first two.

Remember, these three bras must also work for your entire wardrobe, so nude or skin-tone colours give you versatility, but if you wear dark colours, you can play with fabric and lace choices a bit more.

But wait, there's more.....

You will probably also want at least one "special occasion" bra--something pretty and fun, maybe a bit of lace. Something that you can wear to the Captain's table on a cruise, or on date night. Remember, bras are more than functional undergarments. They affect our whole state of being.

And, finally, you'll need at least one sports bra (more if you work out daily). This isn't just for trips to the yoga studio. You want to be comfortable for a night of binge-watching in your comfy pants, too.

At the end of the day, most women would be happy with just ONE bra that's comfortable and flattering, but in a perfect world, women should have at least five bras.

Once you find a pattern that fits (or have a custom bra made), you can have an unlimited number of perfect bras in all kinds of fabrics and laces, knowing that they're all going to fit and, more importantly, knowing that you'll actually WEAR them!
